Hot Wheels: Volvo FE Electric Proving Popular At Knowles

January 23, 2024

Following the recent purchase of a Volvo FE Electric truck, Knowles Logistics’ new wheels are already proving to be a hot choice for its driver, Ben Fox.

Having recently undergone a three-week trial to establish its suitability within Knowles’ operation, Ben Fox has responded positively to the all-electric vehicle, highlighting its responsiveness, nimble handling and low noise output as the standout benefits when behind the wheel.

Knowles’ new Volvo FE Electric features twin electric motors producing 225kWh and 850Nm torque with a Volvo 2-speed gearbox. The total energy storage of the vehicle is 265kWh which helps the truck to maintain a 200km range. The truck is a 4×2 wheeled 23ft curtainside fitted with a tail lift to aid deliveries.

Also featuring lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, the FE Electric equally provides a smooth ride for both occupants and cargo thanks to its front and rear air suspension setup.

Having primarily used the vehicle for urban deliveries within the Cambridgeshire area where Knowles Logistics is based, driver Ben believes that while issues with regard to range remain, all-electric HGVs such as Knowles’ Volvo FE are still well suited for short-drop deliveries.

Knowles has also recently invested in a 150kWh charging unit on its Cambridgeshire-based site where the vehicle can be charged the vehicle in just two hours.

Ben ???: “Overall the driving experience of the Volvo FE has been positive. Reduced noise pollution comparative to a combustion engine HGV means that the truck is ideally suited for urban areas, especially for night-time operations and driving within quieter neighbourhoods.

“With instant torque and a vibration-free operation the new all-electric truck provides a comfortable experience, which ultimately contributes to a smoother overall driving environment. This can be particularly handy when navigating during rush hour or handling especially heavy loads.

“While range still remains an ongoing concern when operating an all-electric HGV, they can still be valuable asset as long as its limitations are well-understood. Having recently operated it on a 3-week trial within the Cambridgeshire area, the vehicle presented no range issues whatsoever for collection and delivery routes as we were only travelling around 150km per day – which is well within its 200km capabilities.”
